>Information on Pansori

This age is the period from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. 5 noted singers working in this period are Gi-Hong Park, Chang-Hwan Kim, Chae-Man Kim, Man-Gab Song, Dong-Baek Lee, Chang-Ryong Kim, Seong-Joon Yoo, Doh-Seong Jeon, and Jeong-Ryeol Jeong.
In this period, the western culture was introduced and the social contradictions were accumulated, which dissolved feudalism of Joseon Dynasty and further, brought the nation into the misfortune of letting the national right stolen by the Japanese imperialism. Introduction of the western culture started to threaten the traditional society that was the foundation of Pansori¡¯s existence. Under this circumstance, Pansori attempted to change itself in order to survive, which brought the birth of Changgeuk.
After 1912, a road show was reopened, starting from Hyeoplyulsa organized by Chae-Man Kim coming from Gwangju. After 1920s, singers started to record their Pansori, along with distribution of gramophones. Pansori become more relied on the general people¡¯s tastes. In addition to following the people¡¯s tastes, Pansori was changed into Gyemyeon style (sad rhythm). The movement of corresponding with the people¡¯s tastes of sad rhythms was initiated by Man-Gab Song, but it is Jeong-Ryeol Jeong who attempted it in earnest. Bang-Wool Im and Hwa-Jung-Seon Lee, with sad rhythms, got the greatest popularity in the day.
Another remarkable thing in this period is that around 1920, Gwonbeon (association of gisaengs) was established in big cities in the nation and Pansori was educated there so many female singers were produced out.
Seon-Yoo Lee, Pan-Gae Jang, Jeong-Moon Kim, Bong-Rae Park, Chang-Shik Gong and Dong-Shil Park who worked in this period are noteworthy even though they are not the five top singers.
In the end of this period, Bang-Wool Im, Yeon-Soo Kim and Jang-Won Kim started to work.
