The first part of the 19th century is called ‘the former term of 8 noted singers’. In this term, 12 Batangs of Pansori were completed and several great singers appeared so Pansori met the heyday, along with rapid development.
The period of 8 noted singers is divided into the first term and the second. The first term is the first half of the 19th century and the second is the second half of the 19th century. The reason why Pansori of the 19th century is divided into the first term and the second term is that Pansori of these two terms is different in several aspects.
The period of 8 noted singers means the time when 8 noted singers worked. Here, 8 (eight) doesn’t mean a number. The period of 8 noted singers means the age that about 8 noted singers worked and “about 8” indicates those who were especially excellent at singing among many noted singers. The 8 noted singers are different, depending on evaluators’ standards for evaluation.
The great singers who are mostly discussed are Sam-Deuk Gwon, Heung-Nok Song, Gye-Dal Yeom, Heung-Gab Mo, Soo-Gwan Goh, Man-Yeob Shin, Je-Cheol Kim, Deok-Gi Joo, and Hae-Cheon Hwang. They were famous for their own Deoneum or special melodies and through development of various Deoneums and melodies they made big contributions to musical refinement of Pansori.
