>Information on Pansori

It is called [Maehwa Taryeong] too. In Noh-Shik JeongĄ¯s [History of Joseon Changgeuk], it is described as one of 12 Batangs of Pansori, but it is not available now. In 1992, a novel of [Maehwa Ga] that is based on [Gangneung Maehwa Taryeong] was found so the details of Gangneung Maehwa Taryeong became open to the world. Saengwon (a government post) Gol working for a library of Gangneung Busa (a government post) meets a famous gisaeng, Maehwa, of Gangneung and plays pleasantly. One day, he receives a letter from his father saying that Gol should come to Seoul to take the state examination.
Arriving in Seoul, Saengwon Gol composes a poem that misses Maehwa in the answer sheet of the state examination and fails in the exam. He returns to Gangneung. Gangneung Busa falsely makes a grave of Maehwa on the street and says to Gol that she died. Saengwon Gol goes to the grave and weeps loudly. He draws a portrait of Maehwa and lives with the portrait in his arms. One day, Maehwa, instructed by the district magistrate, pretends to be a ghost and meets Saengwon Gol. Next day, she induces him to Gyeongpodae, letting him naked and he dances, together with her, to music that consoles their spirits. While doing this, he recognizes that he was deceived by the district magistrate.
[Maehwa Taryeong] is evaluated to remind people of sound life and balance through satire and travesty of Saengwon Gol who becomes depraved.
