As the novel, [Baebijang Jeon], remains, the contents of Baebijang Taryeong are well known. A nobleman, namely, Kim Gyeong living in Seoul, takes Seondal (a government post) Bae living in Seogang to Jeju on his way to start for a new post, Moksa, in Jeju. Baebijang acts like a gentleman renowned for his virtue so upon arrival in Jeju, he keeps away from wine and women. However, tempted by a gisaeng, Aerang, who was ordered by the Jeju Moksa and a servant, Baebijang visited AerangĄ¯s house. There, he gets locked in a wooden rice chest and then, thrown away in the sea. In actuality, it is not the sea, but the backyard of a government office where he was thrown away. However, he doesnĄ¯t know about it so he swims out of the chest and gets himself disgraced. Through this, BaebijangĄ¯s vulgarity is shown and Confucian ideology of morals that is biased and empty is satirized bitingly. Recently, it has been sung by Dong-Jin Park in Pansori. |
