Through the novel entitled [Onggojib Jeon], the contents of Onggojib Taryeong are well known. Onggojib who lives Ongdangchon, Ongjingol is greedy and ill-tempered so he deals every work with obstinacy. He despises Buddhism so he does violence to priests that come to his house to beg bread and finally, arouses a spiritually enlightened Buddhist priest¡¯s anger. The priest uses Taoist magic to make another Onggojib with straw. The faked Onggojib goes to the real Onggojib¡¯s house, removes the real Onggojib from his house and then, lives with his wife. The real Onggojib, after being removed from his house, reforms himself after many hardships and is forgiven by the priest. And then, the real Onggojib returns to his home.
In this work, Onggojib speaks for rich common people who appeared in the latter part of Joseon Dynasty. Their extreme egoistic mind and behaviors deviated from the social norms rose common people¡¯s antipathy so they became the objects of biting sarcasm. In this aspect, Onggojib is like Nolbo and this work reflects the historic realities like development of monetary economy and also conflicts and differentiation among classes. It was restored and sung by Dong-Jin Park. |
