>Information on Pansori

There are only 5 Batangs of Pansori that have been handed down now, but originally, there were 12 Batangs. Pansoris that are currently available are Choonhyangga, Shimcheongga, Heungboga, Sugungga and Jeokbyeokga. These five Pansoris are called ¡°Batang Sori¡¯. The 7 Pansoris that have been excluded in the process of transmission are Byeon Gang-Soi Taryeong, Onggojib Taryeong, Baebijang Taryeong, Gangneung Maehwa Taryeong, Jangkki Taryeong, Musugi Taryeong and Gashinseon Taryeong.
The time when the 7 Batangs were left out of the transmission is the latter part of the 19th century. Pansori that was born from the popular base, succeeded in leading the noblemen to audience of it through changes and development in the 19th century, but through the noblemen¡¯s active involvement and participation, it met considerable changes.
The established theory is that the reason why the seven works were left out is that they were not suitable for the noblemen¡¯s emotions and sense of aesthetics. The contents of these seven works were thoroughly mundane so they couldn¡¯t go well with the culture of the noblemen who required moderation, balance and refinement.
