In the transmission process of Pansori, variation is an indispensable process. As mentioned above, transmission of Pansori is a consecutive process of continuity and variation in the relationship of dialectal tension. Variation is an essential property of an oral and behavioral transmission art like Pansori.
As mentioned in the above, the important thing in variation is intentional and planned variation that a creative musician makes. A creative musician tends to change what he/she learns, instead of doing as he/she is taught. While he/she tries to find a better type, a new thing is made.
For example, Bang-Wool Im has the gifted vocal chords, but he made his best efforts to develop a better thing. It is said that he always hummed. While keeping humming, he corrected his music again and again until a satisfactory type is made. The reason why numerous people have loved him so long is that he created an excellent variation suitable for audience¡¯s preference and emotion.
It is Deoneum that expresses the aspects of variation as it is. Deoneum has a meaning of addition. It means a new addition, that is, a creative part. It indicates an especially good part or a part that is frequently sung by singers.
For example, ¡®Ssukdaemeori¡¯ is Bang-Wool Im¡¯s Deoneum¡¯ or ¡®Jebinojeonggi¡¯ is Chang-Hwan Kim¡¯s Deoneum¡¯, which means that it is Ssukdaemeori or Jebinojeonggi that Bang-Wool Im or Chang-Hwan Kim (1854-1927) is especially good at singing. ¡®Bang-Wool Im¡¯s Deoneum is Jeokbyeokga¡¯ means that Bang-Wool Im is good at singing Jeokbyeokga. Generally, ¡®Badi¡¯ is used to indicate a work as mentioned in the above, but Deoneum is not restricted to a certain ¡®part¡¯. How to name Deoneum is as follows:
Name + Je + Name of a part of Pansori --- Bang-Wool Im Je Ssukdaemeori, Chang-Hwan Kim Je Jebinojeonggi
Name + Badi + Name of a Pansori work (Badi) --- Se-Jong Kim Badi Choonhyangga, Gwang-Su Jeong Badi Heungboga
Here it is important that Deoneum is not restricted to addition of only a phrase. Deoneum is accompanied with development of a unique expression style, that is, Je, beyond a phrase or a work. Heung-Nok Song¡¯s and Yoo-Jeon Park¡¯s Je that are the standards of Dongpyeonje and Seopyeonje are originated from this.
