It is assumed that Badi is originated from ¡®Badda (receive)¡¯. It is used in relation to the transmission genealogy of Pansori. Badi indicates a certain singer¡¯s work such as Choonhyangga, Heungboga, etc. While ¡®Je¡¯ means general characteristics of music that singers make, Badi is used to classify Pansori by work. Here ¡®work¡¯ means a unique world of music that a singer creates.
In transmission of music, the process of Badi¡¯s birth is made by a creative singer. A creative singer masters his/her teacher¡¯s Badi, reorganizes it and then, makes new ¡®Badi¡¯. It is true that the pupils under the guidance of a teacher make different music respectively. Creative singers produce differently creative music, which becomes a different ¡®Badi¡¯. In order for a new Badi to be born, it should be artistically excellent to receive audience¡¯s favorable response and it should be acknowledged as new Badi. This music is transmitted to the next generation. Badis that are made in this way are named after the person who attempted it first as shown on the below:
