Jo in Pansori has several meanings such as constituent sound and mode, that is, type of melody progress and mood, but in general, it is understood as mood. From the modal viewpoint, ¡®Jo¡¯ is explained in the functions of constituent sound and the type of melody, which is called ¡®Gil¡¯. From the vocal viewpoint, ¡®Jo¡¯ means mood that is sentimental and shows feelings so in order to make the concept of the logic and analytical mode clear, it is called ¡®Gil¡¯.
There are three main Jos in Pansori: Gyemyeonjo (one of the Korean scale ? like a minor key), Wujo (highest note of the Korean pentatonic scale) and Pyeongjo (level, contrast to Gyemyeonjo). They are segmented according to the extent of the mood like feelings and sentiment. Their characteristics and segmentations are as follows:
